The description box on a directory profile is where a lot of owners give up. They type "Quality service at fair prices" and move on. An AI assistant can do far better, but only if you give it something real to work with. Garbage notes in, garbage blurb out.

What a weak blurb looks like next to a strong one

Vague

"We are a trusted company offering quality services to customers in the area. Call today!"

Specific

"Family-run HVAC shop in Wichita repairing and installing furnaces and central air since 2009. Same-week appointments across Wichita, Derby and Andover. Call for a free estimate."

The second version tells a buyer what you do, where you do it and what to do next. It also hands search engines the town names they need to match you with nearby searches.

Step one: jot five notes

Before you open any assistant, write these down in plain words:

1

What you are.

The trade or type of shop, in the words a customer would use.

2

Where you work.

Your city, plus any towns or neighborhoods you regularly serve.

3

What you sell most.

Three or four core services or product lines.

4

Why people pick you.

One honest difference: hours, specialty, years in business, a guarantee you really offer.

5

What you want them to do.

Call, book online, stop by, request a quote.

Step two: paste the prompt

The line telling it not to add anything matters. Left alone, assistants will cheerfully invent awards, certifications and warranties.

Step three: the ten-minute edit

  • Read every sentence and delete anything that isn't true
  • Replace stiff phrases with words you'd actually say to a customer
  • Check that the city and service areas are spelled correctly
  • Make sure the phone number and hours, if mentioned, match your profiles exactly
  • Read it out loud once; if it sounds like an ad, cut a line

Step four: put it to work

A finished description does nothing in a document folder. Paste the same core version into your Listings Junkie profile, your Google Business Profile and your other main listings. Using one consistent version keeps your story straight, and keeping your name, address and phone identical alongside it matters even more; this guide on matching business details explains why. Before you hit save, run through the listing checklist so the other fields are filled in too.

Quick answers

Will an AI-written description hurt my rankings?

No, as long as it is accurate and specific. What helps is clear information about your services and service area, wherever the words came from.

Should every directory get a different version?

Not necessary. One strong core description, lightly trimmed where a platform has a shorter limit, is easier to maintain and keeps your details consistent.
