Three Searches That Show Whether Customers Can Find You (and What to Do Next)

Search your name, search your trade, then search from a customer's corner. Fifteen minutes tells you whether you're visible online, and the results point straight to the fix.

A lot of owners have a nagging feeling that new customers can't find them, but they're not sure. They know their regulars come back. They know referrals still trickle in. What they don't know is what a stranger sees when they search for exactly what the business sells.

You can find out in about fifteen minutes with three searches. Each one tests something different, and what you see points directly to what to fix.

Before you start, use a private or incognito browser window on your phone, so your own search history doesn't make you look more visible than you are.

Search one: your business name

Type: your exact business name, plus your town.

What you're testing: whether people who already know about you, like a referral or a past customer, can find you and trust what they see.

Good result: your Google Business Profile appears on the right (or at the top on a phone) with correct hours, phone, photos and reviews. Your website and a few directory profiles show up in the results below.

Warning signs:

  • No profile appears at all. You may not have a Google profile, or it isn't verified.
  • The details are wrong. Old hours, a disconnected phone, the wrong address.
  • Two profiles appear, or old listings show a previous address or name.
  • It looks empty: no photos, no reviews, no description.

The fix: claim and complete your Google profile, and correct or merge any duplicates. This guide covers claiming, verifying and fixing snags. Then click through every directory result and fix anything that doesn't match. Here's why identical details matter.

Search two: your trade plus your town

Type: what you do and where, the way a new customer would. "Roof repair Spokane." "Thai restaurant Mesa." "Family dentist Overland Park."

What you're testing: whether people who've never heard of you can discover you.

Good result: you appear in the map results near the top, and maybe on a directory page or two further down.

Warning signs:

  • You're nowhere on the first screen. Not in the map, not on a directory page.
  • Competitors you know are smaller or newer are above you.
  • You appear, but with a thin profile next to competitors with photos and reviews.

The fix: this usually comes down to three things:

1

Category and services.

Make sure your main category is the most specific one that fits, and list every service you offer. A generic category can keep you out of searches you should win.

2

Presence on other sites.

Search engines look for your business details on trusted directories. If you're barely listed anywhere, add your business to Listings Junkie and work through our list of directories worth claiming. This look at what directory profiles do for you explains why it helps.

3

Reviews.

If competitors have a steady stream of recent reviews and you have a few old ones, start asking every happy customer. This review routine makes it easy.

Search three: from where your customers are

Do: drive or walk to a spot where many of your customers live or work, a few miles from your location, and run search two again. Or ask a friend across town to do it and send you a screenshot.

What you're testing: how far your visibility reaches. Map results shift with the searcher's location, so you might look great from your parking lot and disappear two neighborhoods over.

Good result: you still show up for searches in the areas you serve.

Warning signs:

  • You only appear when searching from right next to your business.
  • A service-area business doesn't show up in the towns it serves.

The fix: if you travel to customers, set your service area to the towns or ZIP codes you actually work in, and mention them naturally in your description and on your website. If customers come to you, strengthen your profile overall: reviews, photos, posts and directory profiles all help you compete farther out. Our guide to winning "near me" searches explains how the radius works.

What the three searches usually reveal

Most businesses that feel invisible fall into one of these patterns:

What you saw What it usually means
Nothing for your name No profile, or not verified
Your name works, your trade doesn't Category, services, reviews or listings need work
You show up nearby but not across town Weak overall prominence, or service area not set
You show up, but nobody calls Thin profile, wrong hours or poor reviews

Why it happens to good businesses

None of this has anything to do with how good your work is. Plenty of excellent businesses are hard to find because they've relied on referrals for years, while newer competitors built complete profiles and asked every customer for a review. The businesses at the top of local search aren't always the best. They're often just the most visible. The good news is that visibility can be built, and this piece on growth from listings shows that even businesses that start late can catch up with steady effort.

Your fix list for this week

  • Claim, verify and complete your Google profile
  • Choose the most specific category and list every service
  • Create your Listings Junkie profile and a few more directory profiles with identical details
  • Correct any old or duplicate listings you found in search one
  • Ask your last ten happy customers for a review
  • Set your service area, if you travel to customers

Then repeat the three searches in a month and compare. For the wider strategy, read local SEO for small businesses, and use the listing checklist to keep everything in shape.
